Days after washing the engine in my SL, I took it for a ride. After driving about a hundred yards, the engine died. As I rolled to a stop, the engine refired and the same thing occured again, and again, and again. To make a long story short, I found that the microswitch connected to the accelerator linkage at the firewall was stuck, I assume on account of my engine washing. After freeing this up, the car once again runs fine. I assume that the opening of the switch off idle closes the 'idle' circuit and opens the 'run' circuit. The slighest pressure on the gas pedal should make the microswitch go 'click', and if not, there is a problem there.
